Dear Temple Beth David,

Many years ago in Pirkei Avot, our rabbis wrote the words “Al Tifrosh Min HaTzibur. Do not separate yourself from the community.”   This wisdom has become timeless, especially on our most frightening, difficult days.  For many of us, and my heart breaks to say it, the last few days have been among them.

In the words of my dear friend and colleague Rabbi Jonathan Blake: “it is (also) a perfect time to practice compassion for oneself and this beautiful, fragile and hurting world.  A time to live what Judaism teaches: love of neighbor, love of humanity, love of God, love of justice, love of mercy and love of peace.”

To that end, I invite you to gather at Temple tomorrow (Saturday November 9) at 7:00pm.  This will not be a time to trade political theories or expound on what comes next.  Rather, it will be a time to connect with the community we love, to listen, to be heard, and to set a tone of harmony and compassion to carry us forward.

We’ll begin with Havdallah in the Social Hall.  Feel free to bring a favorite drink or snack, or a reading or poem that brings you solace.

I hope to see you tomorrow night.  Please know too that whether or not you attend, my door is open to you anytime if you’d like to talk or share what you’re feeling.  Those who belong to marginalized populations or whose loved ones do have been particularly shaken.  I am committed to being there for you.  For all of you.

With love and hope,

Rabbi Rebecca Gutterman
