Each week, each day, we grow, and change.

Once upon a time a group of conservative Rabbinical students were sitting in their homiletics class. The professor, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, the eventual founder of Reconstructionist Judaism sat and listened to his students deliver their sermons. One student got up and gave an impassioned speech. At the end there was silence. Rabbi Kaplan sat deep in thought. The students waited silently to hear what the Rabbi would say. Finally, he spoke. He said, "That was the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Who taught you that?" Sheepishly the student responded, "You did sir. Last week." Again Rabbi Kaplan sat in silence and pursed his lips and responded, "I have evolved since then."

One of the great gifts of Shabbat is that it allows us a weekly check in. It allows us to take time and reflect on how we have evolved from the past week. I encourage us all to take a little time each week to check in with ourselves. To make note of where we are and then in the week to come see where we have gone. Each week, each day, we grow, and change. Changing our mind is not the sign of a weak mind, on the contrary it is a sign of powerful and healthy human mind. Shabbat Shalom!
